Evian, host to the G8 Summit 2003 |
Evian is located in the northern part of the French Alps, in the Department of Haute-Savoie, Southeastern France.
It is set in a site of outstanding scenic beauty, on the southern shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman in French), 45 km (28 miles) from Geneva. The town stands facing Switzerland, while nestling against the foothills of the Chablais Alpine range, whose main peaks rise to heights of 2,200 meters (7,200 feet).
Its continental-type climate is tempered by Lake Geneva, the largest lake in Western Europe with a surface area of 582 sq. km. (225 square miles).

Evian rises in terraces from the lake side at an altitude ranging from 372 m to 725 m (1,220-2,380 ft). But it owes its prosperity and fame to its natural mineral water, whose properties were discovered in 1790.
Evian is the administrative seat of a canton (Departmental subdivision) comprising 15 municipalities) of 25,000 inhabitants. The local councils are in the process of combining to form a “community of communes” to be called “Pays d'Evian” (“Evian country”).
Today's Evian is a modern spa resort renowned for its first-class tourist amenities. Yet at the same time it has preserved its garden city appeal and turn-of-the-century (Belle Epoque) architecture.
